A quote from the inventor may not seem very convincing, but I still had to share this wonderful, surprising piece of good fortune with you.

Now a few words about the Kwiggle® E:

1. Compactness: We did it: the Kwiggle® E is still compact enough to fit in your carry-on luggage. As you know, carry-on size makes all the difference compared to other bikes. You can take your carry-on with you everywhere and stow it anywhere: under seats, in overhead bins, in the trunk, and in lockers. Almost everything is designed for this crucial size: 55x40x25 cm. The perfect companion for commuters, vacationers, and business travelers.

2. Drive concept: During development, we naturally also tested folding bikes with front motors. When the tires spun while riding uphill or riding on gravel or wet roads became unsafe, we decided that our Kwiggle® E needed a rear wheel motor. This concept is preferred for all high-quality e-bikes due to its many advantages. It makes riding safer and more comfortable.

3. Weight: While other folding e-bikes often weigh over 16 kg, our goal was to achieve a weight of less than 12 kg. To do this, we needed a drive that weighed less than two kilograms. The prototype weighs a little more, but we are confident that we can achieve our goal.

Normal e-bikes weigh around 20-30 kg. The motor and battery together often weigh over 6 kg. The reason for the high weight is the high torque required for the slow-turning tires. How convenient that our tires turn twice as fast! This means we can use a small, lightweight, fast-rotating motor and additionally transfer the torque to the rear wheel. This makes a motor weight of only 650 g possible – a huge weight advantage. The transmission provides respectable torque with a maximum motor power of 1,200 W (and 250 W continuous power). Hard to believe.

In total, the entire e-bike drive weighs only about 1.3–1.5 kg.

4. Mountain capability: We wanted the Kwiggle® E to have enough power to push you up even steep hills. To test this, we drove to the Alps and put the Kwiggle® E through its paces. Although it can't compete with an e-mountain bike, we were surprised at how well we were able to climb even really steep mountain sections. We are convinced that you will also be blown away by what we were able to achieve with this small additional weight.

5. Noise level: E-bikes have become quite quiet these days, and we wanted to achieve the same result so that the drive noise is not noticeable. It should be whisper-quiet so that the riding experience is not disturbed. We have managed to reliably transfer the power from the motor via a toothed belt. This is silent and low-maintenance. We have developed an automatic tensioner that generates the correct belt tension at all times without us having to pre-tension the belt more strongly. This purely mechanical solution enables us to increase efficiency enormously.

6. Battery: Finding a battery that also fits into the world's smallest folding bike was not that easy. On top of that, it had to be lightweight, or better still, adaptable to the upcoming route. So that you can try out the Kwiggle® E sooner, we decided not to develop and certify our own battery and instead looked for standard batteries with approx. 100–360 Wh. Our creative master Karsten then thought of cordless tool batteries. These now provide sufficient power for large, high-performance mobile tools. This was an ingenious idea, because it means you can decide for yourself whether you need a range of just 15 km or 50 km. Or you can even carry a spare battery with you, which can be changed in seconds. The motto is: better to have less total weight and a spare battery with you just in case than to carry unnecessary weight all the time.

The tool batteries have been in use for decades in the most adverse conditions and are therefore safe, high-quality, and robust. Unfortunately, they are not yet used in bicycles, so we have to carry out additional tests to be able to install them in the Kwiggle® E. As things stand today, we see no danger that these batteries cannot be used for our purposes.

An alternative is the readily available water bottle-shaped batteries, which can also be easily integrated into the folding design and configured with the right characteristics.

7. Range: The range depends on the cell quality and battery size, and thus on the desired weight. 72Wh is sufficient for up to 15 km with a battery weight of around 500g. 270Wh is sufficient for up to 55 km with a battery weight of 1.5-2 kg. If you need the Kwiggle for short distances and value a low total weight, a small battery will probably suffice, although a second one could be carried along and replaced in a flash. Incidentally, these smaller batteries can be taken on board an airplane (2 x 100Wh, i.e., 2 x 4.0Ah or 2 x 5.5Ah). This makes Kwiggle® E the only e-bike in the world that can be taken on board an airplane in your carry-on luggage.

10. Permissible total weight: Finally, we wanted to increase the permissible total weight for the e-bike. Not least because the test standard requires a higher load. We have therefore adapted the frame design while keeping the weight almost the same. The permissible total weight of the Kwiggle® E is now 110 kg.

11. Current status: We did it. The Kwiggle® E is ready to be sold and built. We will go through the certification process and manufacture the Kwiggle® E by spring. So you can enjoy your mobile freedom with an exciting bike during the warmer months.

12. Upgrade: Higher load requirements are placed on the frame for the approval of an e-bike. We achieve this through an adapted frame design. When upgrading, the two lower frame parts must therefore also be replaced. This is already included in the upgrade price.
